Smashing Pumpkins "Live at Riviera Theatre Chicago"
DESCRIPTION :
Live at Riviera Theatre Chicago, October 23th 1995 - WBRU-FM
On October 23, 1995, The Smashing Pumpkins played a legendary, intimate concert at the Riviera Theatre in their hometown of Chicago. This show served as an unofficial and highly anticipated premiere performance ahead of the release of their magnum opus, the double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.
Because of the massive anticipation for the new material, the show was broadcast live on the radio via WBRU-FM (and simultaneously locally on Chicago's Q101). During the performance, a power outage occurred, cutting the audio briefly into the set. Instead of calling it quits, the band continued to perform in partial darkness, creating a notoriously intimate and legendary moment in the band's touring history.
The setlist was split heavily between their breakout tracks from Siamese Dream (like "Today," "Cherub Rock," and "Disarm") and the yet-to-be-released Mellon Collie material (including the live debut of heavy-hitters like "Zero," "Jellybelly," and "Bullet With Butterfly Wings"). The night is also famous for a surprise encore featuring legendary rock band Cheap Trick, where frontman Billy Corgan and the band played covers of Cheap Trick classics like "Auf Wiedersehen" and "Baby Loves to Rock".
