DESCRIPTION :

Many thousands of words have been written about the post Pink Floyd career of Sid Barrett, but much of what has been written is contradictory or complete fabrication so it is not as easy as one would like to have thought to write descriptions of his only two radio sessions / broadcasts from 1970 and 1971.

The music on this collection is very peculiar in that it showcases both Pink Floyd’s original guitarist, and the one who would be in the band during the glory days. The unsung hero of it all is David Gilmour. After Syd Barrett’s unravelling during the last few years of the 1960s, his replacement David Gilmour did his best to provide some sort of musical and emotional structure for him appearing with him on these radio sessions playing bass, electric guitar and organ as well as singing background vocals.

Side 1 of this limited-edition vinyl features Syds two and only radio sessions.

The session 1 recording from 24 February 1970 is one of the most pivotal yet enigmatic moments in Syd Barrett's post-Pink Floyd career. Recorded just weeks after the release of his solo debut, The Madcap Laughs, the session captured Syd in a state of fragile, hesitant creativity.

Accompanied solely by his electric guitar and with Gilmour, and Jerry Shirley, the drummer from Humble Pie, the session was recorded in a single three-hour studio stint, he laid down five tracks: one from the new album ("Terrapin"), three then unreleased songs from what would become his eponymous second LP later in the year and a completely unique piece titled "Two of a Kind." This last song, which may or may not have been written, or written by Floyd keyboard player Richard Wright, is a gentle and surprisingly conventional love ditty reportedly written for a girlfriend, and which remains one of the great lost treasures of his catalogue, never officially released.

The session is haunting for its stark intimacy; his voice wavers, his guitar timing stutters, yet flashes of his singular melodic genius still break through the uncertainty.

In stark contrast, the 16 February 1971 session represents Syd's final attempt at recording new music, occurring just days before his last-ever radio appearance on John Peel's radio show. By this time, his second album, Barrett, was complete, and he arrived for the session with two members of his recent studio band, Gilmour (although some claim that it was bassist/vocalist Jack Monck who would play with Barrett in a band called Stars the following year) and drummer Jerry Shirley. The goal was to record three entirely new, unreleased songs: "Baby Lemonade," "Love Song," and "Dominoes." While "Baby Lemonade" would later be re-recorded for his second album, the 1971 session versions of these three tracks are unique artifacts. The recordings reveal a more driven, rock-oriented approach. Though more together than the 1970 session, a palpable tension and distance linger on the tapes, underscoring the immense difficulty of the process.

The legacy of these two sessions, especially the 1971 recordings, is defined by their official suppression and near-mythical status among collectors. Famously, producer John Walters deemed the 1971 takes unusable for broadcast due to their rough sound and Syd's reportedly detached performance, and the tapes were subsequently archived and forgotten for decades and here they are on vinyl. Remastered using the best available technology to make them the best they could possibly sound.

Side 2 of this limited-edition vinyl features an ultra-rare 1967 18-minute-long interview.

What makes this interview so fascinating to Barrett and Floyd fans, is not only the length of the interview, but when it was recorded, just after the release of Floyds first album, “Piper at the Gates of Dawn”, Syd is very relaxed and candid and talks about his art and art school, which is a little known side to Syd along with how he feels about becoming a musician and the fame associated with it. (One can only wonder what would have happened to Pink Floyd if Syd had remained an artist?).

This interview is a rare opportunity to actually hear from Syd himself, in his own words, rather the many, many people who claim to of known him or speak for him

This very limited vinyl – only 500 copies world-wide, is an essential purchase for fans of Syd, Pink Floyd and English Psychedelia.
