Recorded in 1983 on a rudimentary portable cassette deck inside his cell at the California Medical Facility (CMF) in Vacaville, Live at San Quentin stands as one of the most viscerally raw documents in the outsider folk canon. Charles Manson — armed with nothing but an acoustic guitar and an unchecked stream of consciousness — delivers an hour of improvised songs and spoken declarations, all punctuated by the ambient sounds of institutional life: flushing toilets, distant inmate chatter, and the dull hum of incarceration. Originally circulated in the late 1980s on a limited run of roughly 250 cassette copies under the title White Rasta, the material was first given a proper commercial release in 1993 by Grey Matter Records.
The album occupies a genuinely singular place in the landscape of prison recordings. Where most such documents carry historical weight through circumstance alone, Live at San Quentin also holds a strange melodic charm — its thirteen tracks ranging from the wryly pop-referential (Boxcar Willy and Big Bad Joe, Marilyn Monroe Was My Childhood Shame) to the purely improvisatory and hypnotic. The cover art, which pointedly parodies the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds, serves as a sardonic reminder of Manson's well-documented, if brief, proximity to that world — Dennis Wilson having famously housed Manson and members of his circle in the late 1960s.
